A U.S. submarine torpedoed and sank an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean off Sri Lanka's coast, killing dozens of sailors (87 bodies recovered, 32 crew rescued) in the first such sinking since World War II, prompting Iran to launch fresh missile barrages at Israel and U.S. bases while Israeli strikes expanded into Lebanon targeting missile sites, nuclear facilities, and leadership, reducing Tehran's launch capacity significantly; casualties stand at over 1,045 in Iran, 11 in Israel, six U.S. troops, and more than 70 in Lebanon amid open-ended bombardment, driving oil price surges from disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman, with Iran threatening broader regional infrastructure destruction and NATO in Turkey intercepting an incoming Iranian ballistic missile. Just an update on the early stages of WWIII.
An unexpected outage at the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant east of Havana, combined with substation failures in Las Tunas province, plunged two-thirds of the island, including the capital, into darkness, with repairs to the boiler superheater and leaks expected to take three to four days while only the Felton 1 plant in Holguín remains operational. The crisis worsens chronic fuel shortages from strict Trump administration oil shipment curbs and the loss of Venezuelan supplies after Nicolás Maduro's ouster in January, leaving Havana residents facing severe daily disruptions and relying on solar panels or generators as the government blames U.S. sanctions for underinvestment in the aging grid. Cuban leadership at this point has to cede to the demands of the U.S. as it seems like the Cuban people cannot tolerate this level of difficulty forever. In the multipolar world regional influence becomes supreme so it only makes sense that the U.S. would intensify its grip on nearby nations like Cuba.
A Ukrainian naval drone struck the Russian-flagged, U.S.- and U.K.-sanctioned LNG tanker Arctic Metagaz in the Mediterranean Sea near Malta's territorial waters, reportedly launched from Libya's coast, causing it to catch fire and sink, though all 30 crew members were safely rescued by Maltese and Russian teams with no casualties. President Putin condemned the strike as an act of "international terrorism and piracy," linking it to prior Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil tankers in the Black Sea and Mediterranean and underscoring escalating sabotage against Russia's sanctioned shadow fleet used to evade Western restrictions amid the ongoing war. With the situation in Iran spiraling quickly out of control, trying to maintain oil trade routes will be seen as an existential imperative for countries like Russia. Oil prices are going to drive many nations all in on WWIII as the new world order heavily depends on winners and losers in that regard.

A bipartisan effort to invoke the War Powers Resolution and require congressional approval for continued U.S. hostilities against Iran failed in the Senate as Republicans united behind the administration to defeat the measure, preserving the president's authority to sustain airstrikes, naval operations, and other actions without new legislative constraints as the conflict broadens; defense officials indicate potential operations lasting 3-8 weeks with no immediate de-escalation in sight, reflecting strong partisan alignment on national security priorities amid rising global energy market volatility from the Middle East escalation. Congress has long been incompetent and if this continues we're going to end with an executive branch that effectively functions like a king would. The real question is how to fix Congress so that they can make decisions and not be so afraid of accountability that they vest all powers in the executive.
Kraken Financial, a Wyoming-chartered Special Purpose Depository Institution, obtained a limited-purpose master account granting direct connectivity to the Fed's core payments system including Fedwire, eliminating intermediary banks for faster, lower-cost fiat transfers and enabling atomic settlement between fiat and crypto, enhanced institutional cash management, and programmable products under full-reserve requirements holding 100% liquid assets against client deposits. The phased rollout prioritizes institutional clients after over five years of regulatory scrutiny, marking historic convergence of digital assets with traditional banking rails. Separately the White House nominated former Fed governor Kevin Warsh to chair the Federal Reserve, signaling potential shifts in monetary policy direction. For those of us like myself who see a crypto-based financial system as superior to the fiat-based monetary system we currently have this is a huge step in the right direction.
The U.S. Court of International Trade ruled that importers are entitled to full refunds on tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, invalidated last month by the Supreme Court, covering duties from 10% to 50% on goods from dozens of countries including Mexico, Canada, and China, with Judge Richard Eaton's decision in the Atmus Filtration case requiring Customs and Border Protection to begin processing repayments, potentially automatically for affected entries. The administration collected an estimated $130 billion from these tariffs before invalidation, creating a major setback for trade enforcement goals and prompting discussions of a new 15% global tariff replacement amid ongoing negotiations and business pushback for expedited, complete refunds.

The USDA approved Ohio's waiver to bar SNAP benefits from buying carbonated beverages where sugar, corn syrup, high-fructose corn syrup, or other caloric sweeteners appear as the primary or secondary ingredient, with the restriction effective October 1 targeting soft drinks to encourage healthier nutrition choices among recipients. State officials emphasized empowering better dietary decisions in alignment with public health goals amid rising obesity concerns, as at least a dozen other states have secured similar approvals for soft drink bans on SNAP reflecting a growing trend in benefit program reforms. The more libertarian minded might see this as paternalism, while the more socially minded might see this as a way to keep the poor from having pleasant experiences. I see it as a win for our understanding of what the government is for as we should use public powers in ways that uplift people and don't allow for their degradation as these harmful foods would.
Minnesota filed a federal lawsuit to halt the withholding of $243 million in Medicaid payments, arguing the pause violates due process by bypassing required hearings and evidence while federal officials froze the funds over alleged program noncompliance and fraud risks, potentially forcing service cuts for low-income residents. The state contends the action lacks proper procedural safeguards and threatens essential health coverage, tying into broader oversight hearings examining state-level program integrity under the current administration.
Google abandoned plans for a data center in unincorporated Linn County and pursued annexation into the city of Palo following passage of a stringent local ordinance limiting such developments, addressing community concerns over infrastructure strain, water usage, energy demands, and environmental impacts from large-scale facilities. Local officials and residents pushed the restrictions to manage growth pressures in rural areas, keeping Google's major Iowa expansion on track while navigating increasing regulatory pushback on tech infrastructure projects. So the rural people in Iowa don't want data centers either because they want to enjoy clean air, water, reasonable energy prices and so on. Where then will these data centers go?
Nebraska's attorney general filed suit claiming Roblox creates an unsafe environment by failing to adequately prevent predatory behavior toward minors and employing deceptive practices to attract young users, with the complaint accusing the gaming platform of insufficient safeguards against grooming and exploitation despite its child-heavy audience. This action joins similar lawsuits from other states focusing on online safety failures, as critics argue the company's business model prioritizes engagement over robust protections for vulnerable players. We collectively need to rethink our relationship and it seems that the fate of the youth depends on what we come up with.
